.jpg "Image") Billy Begley Reunited with White after the tandem previously worked together at MSU, Begley is actively involved with every aspect of EMCC’s daily basketball operations, including game-day coaching duties, scouting preparation as well as strength and conditioning supervision. Together they have jointly helped stretch the Lions’ ongoing string of consecutive NJCAA Tournament appearances, season-ending Top 15 national rankings, NJCAA Region 23 Tournament championships and MACJC North Division regular-season crowns to three straight years dating back to the 2009-10 season. Along with helping to maintain EMCC’s place among the nation’s elite junior college hoops programs with continuing success on the court each of the past two seasons, Begley has also teamed with White to bring in yet another quality recruiting class in advance of a much-anticipated 2012-13 campaign. During the past two years, a total of 12 Lion basketball players have signed with four-year senior colleges, including all eight sophomores from this past season’s EMCC squad. Begley and White previously worked together for four seasons (2004-07) at Mississippi State, where Begley was a four-year letterman as a guard for the Bulldogs while White was serving as an assistant coach on Rick Stansbury’s MSU staff. During their prior stint together at MSU, the Bulldogs earned a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances and an NIT semifinal-round berth, along with claiming an overall Southeastern Conference regular-season championship and back-to-back SEC Western Division titles. With bachelor’s and master’s degrees from MSU, Begley came to EMCC after having spent the 2009-10 campaign as an assistant men’s basketball coach on J.P. Piper’s coaching staff at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, La. During his year’s stint with the Colonels, Begley assisted in all areas of NSU’s day-to-day basketball operations, including on-the-floor coaching responsibilities, scouting and game preparation, monitoring player academic progress, and supervision of the program’s summer basketball camps. Having served as a three-time team co-captain for Stansbury’s MSU Bulldogs, Begley was a part of three NCAA Tournament teams, an NIT semifinalist club, one SEC championship squad, and three SEC Western Division title teams during his five-year collegiate playing career (2004-08) in Starkville. Begley stayed onboard at his alma mater in a support role on Stansbury’s 2008-09 staff while completing his master’s degree in business administration (MBA). While serving as a graduate assistant at State, Begley added an SEC Tournament crown and a fourth NCAA Tournament appearance to his impressive resume. Off the court, Begley earned four consecutive selections to the SEC Academic Honor Roll after garnering SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll status as a collegiate rookie in 2003-04. Begley received his undergraduate degree with cum laude honors in business management from MSU in 2007. A native of Henderson, Ky., Begley spent the 2002-03 season competing for Notre Dame Prep in Fitchburg, Mass. Prior to graduating from Webster County High School in Dixon, Ky., in 2002 following an injury-plagued senior season, Begley played three previous seasons at Henderson County High School. |
