EMCC sweeps visiting Northeast in North Division hoops play Print E-mail
SCOOBA – The East Mississippi basketball teams registered their third straight home divisional sweep of the season, claiming a 55-38 win over Northeast Mississippi Monday in women’s action and capping the night with a 71-64 victory over the visiting Tigers at Keyes T. Currie Coliseum on the Scooba campus.

In Monday’s opener, head coach Sharon Thompson’s Lady Lions broke open a five-point contest (22-17) at the half by scoring 11 unanswered points to begin the second half.  By the midway point of the closing period, the EMCC women had mounted a comfortable 19-point cushion (40-21).

In improving to 10-8 overall and 4-2 in MACJC North Division play, the Lady Lions were led by Martika Hull’s fifth straight double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds.  The former Southeast Lauderdale product now has eight double-doubles on the season and 15 for her 50-game EMCC career.

Slowed by 34 turnovers, the Lady Tigers, now 4-10 overall and 2-4 in league play, did not have a player score in double figures on the night.  Amber Johnson and Leota Cornelius had eight points apiece for Northeast.

In Monday’s nightcap, head coach Mark White’s 16-3 Lions won for the eighth time in their last nine decisions and maintained their North Division lead at 5-1 in league action.

After trailing 26-24 at the break and down by five points (31-26) early in the second half, the Lions scored seven unanswered points to force the ninth tie of the contest (33-33) coming at the 15:35 mark.  With sophomore guard CoCo Ware and reserve forward Richard Dixon scoring five points apiece during a 10-1 EMCC run, the Lions went up by nine points (43-34) with 12:50 left and maintained control the remainder of the game.

The Lions’ lead was cut to five points (69-64) with a minute left on a tip-in by Northeast’s Tyrie Berry, but Ware capped a 25-point performance by scoring on a breakaway basket on a feed from backcourt mate Deonte Alexander to finish the game’s scoring.  A preseason NJCAA All-American from Starkville, Ware scored 19 of his game-high 25 points in the second half.

Freshman forward Jonathan King added 15 points, seven rebounds, five steals and four assists off the EMCC bench, while Dixon and Starkville’s John Harris each added nine points for the winners.

In falling to 8-8 overall and 3-3 in division play, the Northeast men were led by Tyler Pritchard and Emmanuel Ezejiofo with 19 and 17 points, respectively.

Earlier this season in North Division home action, the EMCC squads swept both Coahoma and Itawamba on Dec. 7 and Jan. 11, respectively.

The East Mississippi basketball teams continue their current home stand by entertaining Northwest Mississippi in a Thursday doubleheader on the Scooba campus.  Women’s action begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by a 7:30 p.m. men’s contest at EMCC’s Currie Coliseum.
