|EMCC bounces back with hoops sweep at Holmes|
GOODMAN – The East Mississippi basketball teams bounced back from losses earlier in the week to sweep Holmes on the road Thursday night at Frank Branch Coliseum. After being swept Monday at Mississippi Delta, the EMCC women claimed a 62-47 win over the Lady Bulldogs, while the Lions completed Thursday’s sweep with a convincing 87-54 triumph over the Holmes men.
In Thursday’s opener, head coach Sharon Thompson’s Lady Lions improved to 9-8 overall and 3-2 in MACJC North Division play with the 15-point victory. Sophomore forward Martika Hull paced the EMCC women by posting her fourth straight double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. The former Southeast Lauderdale standout now has seven double-doubles on the season and 14 for her EMCC career.
Freshman guard Natalie Tate of Columbus and Oxford’s Jacquelyn Carothers added 17 and 10 points, respectively, for the winners.
Winners of seven of their last eight decisions, head coach Mark White’s Lions raised their overall mark to 15-3 on the year and 4-1 in North Division play with the impressive 33-point road victory. After leading by 16 points (42-26) at the break, the EMCC lead ballooned to 38 points in the second half.
With EMCC’s win at Holmes, coupled with Itawamba’s 77-72 loss at Mississippi Delta on Thursday, the Lions have taken sole possession of first place in the North Division. ICC now trails the 4-1 Lions with a 4-2 division mark, followed by Holmes, Delta and Northeast Mississippi all at 3-2 in league play.
Preseason NJCAA All-American CoCo Ware of Starkville once again led EMCC with 21 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Terence Bennett of Jackson matched his career high with 18 points and added four assists. Bennett previously tallied 18 points at Holmes a year ago as a freshman. Freshman Deonte Alexander of Nashville also scored in double figures for the winners with 14 points.
The Holmes women fell to 1-11 overall and 1-4 in league play, while the Bulldogs dropped to 7-9 overall and 3-2 within the division with Thursday’s setbacks.
The East Mississippi basketball teams return home for a pair of divisional doubleheaders next week. EMCC opens the week by playing host to Northeast Mississippi on Monday, followed by a twinbill against Northwest Mississippi on Thursday. Game times are set for 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. both nights at Keyes T. Currie Coliseum on the Scooba campus.
