|East Mississippi swept at Mississippi Delta in divisional hoops play|
MOORHEAD – The East Mississippi basketball teams were swept Monday at Mississippi Delta, falling 59-49 in the women’s game and dropping a 64-61 decision in the men’s contest.
Head coach Mark White’s Lions held an eight-point lead with seven minutes left in the contest, but the home-standing Trojans won the battle on the boards down the stretch. For the contest, Mississippi Delta owned a 20-7 advantage on offensive rebounds.
The EMCC men, now 14-3 overall, had their six-game winning streak snapped with the loss while also dropping their first decision in four tries in MACJC North Division play on the year.
The Lions were paced by preseason NJCAA All-American CoCo Ware with 23 points, while fellow Starkville native John Harris and Meridian’s Donovan Walker added 11 points apiece. Led by Falando Jones’ game-high 26-points, the Trojans evened their records to 6-6 overall and 2-2 in division play with the victory.
In Monday’s opener, head coach Sharon Thompson’s Lady Lions fell to the .500 mark both overall (8-8) and in divisional play (2-2) with the 10-point road setback to MDCC. Held below 50 points for the third time in the last four games, the EMCC women struggled again offensively against the Lady Trojans. Along with being limited to just 14-of-64 (22%) field-goal shooting by Delta, the Lady Lions were also victimized by sub-par 16-of-35 (46%) accuracy from the free-throw line.
Individually, EMCC was again led by sophomore forward Martika Hull, who approached another double-double with a game-high 18 points and nine rebounds. However, the former Southeast Lauderdale standout hit just 4-of-12 shots from the field and only 10-of-20 from the stripe. Ashley Love led a trio of double-digit Delta scorers with 14 points.
The East Mississippi basketball teams continue divisional play on the road by taking on Holmes Thursday evening in Goodman. EMCC returns home next week to play host to divisional foes Northeast Mississippi on Monday and Northwest Mississippi on Thursday. Game times both days are set for 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. at Keyes T. Currie Coliseum on the Scooba campus.
