MERIDIAN – The EMCC Lions completed their regular-season series sweep of Meridian Community College with a convincing 78-45 road win over the Eagles Wednesday night at Graham Gymnasium on the MCC campus. The East Mississippi women dropped a 52-44 decision to the Lady Eagles in Wednesday’s opener.
Coach Mark White’s Lions jumped out to an early double-digit lead and maintained a 38-26 halftime advantage over the home-standing Eagles. EMCC’s lead continued to grow throughout the second stanza, as the visitors from Scooba won their fourth straight game in improving to 12-2 on the season. The Lions have limited the opposition to an average of just 57.5 points an outing during their current four-game winning streak. In November, the Lions claimed an 82-65 home triumph over Meridian, which fell to 5-10 on the year with Wednesday’s 33-point setback. Freshman point guard Anthony Alexander, of Nashville, paced a balanced EMCC scoring attack with 14 points, while Starkville’s CoCo Ware and hometown product Donovan Walker added 13 points apiece. Freshman Jonathan King contributed his third double-double in the last four games with 11 points and 11 rebounds for the winners. In Wednesday’s opener, head coach Sharon Thompson’s Lady Lions struggled offensively against the 24th-ranked Lady Eagles. Without a single player scoring in double digits, Columbus freshman Natalie Tate led the EMCC women with nine points. Former CHS teammate Nashedra Barry and sophomore Martika Hull, a former Southeast Lauderdale standout, followed with eight points each for the visitors. The Meridian women improved to 12-1 on the season with their 11th consecutive win, while the Lady Lions fall to 7-6 with the loss. The East Mississippi basketball teams resume MACJC North Division competition Monday (Jan. 11) by playing host to Itawamba in a hoops doubleheader on the Scooba campus. A 5:30 p.m. women’s contest will be followed by a 7:30 p.m. men’s tilt at EMCC’s Keyes T. Currie Coliseum. |
