Choctaw Central's Mercedes Cotton signs with EMCC Softball Print E-mail
SCOOBA – Former Choctaw Central High School softball standout Mercedes Cotton has signed a national letter of intent with East Mississippi Community College, as announced this week by EMCC head softball coach Kate Neely.

Last spring at Choctaw Central, Cotton was selected All-South State and All-District after leading the Lady Warriors with double-digit pitching victories on the mound and hitting around a .400 clip at the plate as a senior.  She teamed with fellow EMCC softball signee Sydney Tubby to help lead head coach Mike Luke’s 2009 CCHS squad to the program’s first playoff appearance in five years.  Along with being named team MVP this past season, Cotton participated as a Class 1A-2A-3A North team member in the 2009 Mississippi high school slow-pitch all-star game.

Off the playing field, Cotton was the 2009 class valedictorian at Choctaw Central, where she also served as senior class vice president and junior class president.  She also was vice president of the Beta Club and a member of the school’s yearbook staff.  In addition to earning the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Award, Cotton was the 2009 recipient of the Raising Initiatives in Science and Engineering (RISE) Scholarship as awarded by Applied Geo Technologies, Inc. (AGT).  She attended the University of Tennessee this past fall, before deciding to return to her home state of Mississippi to resume her softball career.

Cotton is the daughter of Robert and Patricia Cotton, of the Pearl River community.
