.jpg "Image") Named to the 2009 NJCAA All-American First Team, sophomore quarterback Randall Mackey also earned Player of the Year honors from the Mississippi Bowl Committee, headed by bowl game title sponsors Dub Herring (left) and Barry Harper (right). In addition, EMCC sophomore offensive tackle Quartney Cox, of West Point, has been selected to the NJCAA All-American Second Team for second-year head coach Buddy Stephens’ fourth-ranked Lions. A two-time NJCAA Region 23 Offensive MVP selection, Mackey led the NJCAA in pass completion percentage this past year by connecting on 232-of-334 aerials for 69.5 percent. The 6-foot, 185-pound signal-caller also ended the 2009 campaign ranked second nationally with 32 touchdown passes and third by averaging 283.8 passing yards per contest. While rushing for 579 yards on 107 carries as a sophomore, Mackey also finished second nationally in averaging 336.5 yards of total offense per outing in 2009. The recipient of the Mississippi Bowl Committee’s 2009 Player of the Year honor, Mackey passed for a national-best 3,122 yards this past season despite missing one contest due to injury for the 11-1 Lions. The former Bastrop (La.) High School standout had three games with 400 or more passing yards in 2009, including a career-best 482 yards (on 31-of-42 passing) and seven passing touchdowns in EMCC’s memorable 75-71 victory over Mississippi Gulf Coast in the MACJC state championship contest. In helping lead the EMCC Lions to a two-year composite record of 19-3 and school-first, back-to-back state playoff appearances, Mackey completed his 21-game career in Scooba having thrown for 5,940 yards and 56 touchdowns on 425-of-654 passing (65%). While rushing for 1,065 career yards and nine touchdowns on 187 attempts, Mackey accounted for 7,005 career yards of total offense and 65 touchdowns in quarterbacking East Mississippi to a perfect 12-0 composite mark in MACJC North Division play. An honorable mention NJCAA All-American selection as a freshman for the 8-2 Lions, Mackey threw for 2,818 yards and 24 touchdowns on 193-of-320 passing (60.3%), while also rushing for 486 yards on 80 carries in 2008. A product of West Point High School, Cox was a two-year mainstay on EMCC’s solid offensive line that enabled the Lions’ potent offensive attack to rank among the national team leaders in passing offense and total offense during each of the past two seasons. The 6-foot-4, 275-pound offensive tackle was a two-time NJCAA All-Region 23 performer and was tabbed by the state’s head coaches as the 2009 MVP among the MACJC North Division’s offensive linemen. As a team this past season, the 11-1 Lions of East Mississippi finished the year ranked fourth nationally in the NJCAA/JCFootball.com Poll behind National Champion Blinn College (Texas), No. 2 Fort Scott CC (Kansas) and third-ranked Navarro College (Texas). Winners of the second annual Mississippi Bowl over Arizona Western, EMCC was also ranked second nationally this year in the final JCGridiron.com Dirty 30 rankings and fifth in the JC Grid-Wire National Top 25. Individually a year ago for the 10th-ranked EMCC Lions, current Mississippi State wide receiver/kick return specialist Leon Berry and Jamar Hornsby were both named to the 2008 NJCAA All-American Second Team. |
