East Mississippi women prevail 63-55 at Shelton State Print E-mail
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Freshman forward Nashedra Barry tallied a season-high 25 points to help lead the East Mississippi women’s basketball team to a 63-55 road victory over Shelton State Saturday afternoon.

A former standout at Columbus High School, Barry connected on 13-of-14 free throws en route to more than doubling her previous season high of 12 points set at East Central last month.

In their final action before the holiday break, head coach Sharon Thompson’s 7-5 Lady Lions completed their season sweep of Shelton State with Saturday’s road triumph.  Back on Nov. 12 in Scooba, the EMCC women rallied from a 36-18 halftime deficit against the Lady Bucs to post a 70-68 overtime victory in the year’s first head-to-head meeting between reigning NJCAA Tournament participants.

Saturday in Tuscaloosa, EMCC came back from a 27-26 halftime deficit to go ahead by double figures in the second stanza before settling for the eight-point win.  Sophomore forward Martika Hull, a product of Southeast Lauderdale High School, followed with a dozen points on the strength of 8-of-10 shooting from the line.  Freshman guard Shanteria Tate, of Noxubee County High School, added nine points for the winners.  As a team, the Lady Lions were 29-of-41 from the charity stripe for the game.

Following the Christmas break, the East Mississippi basketball teams return to the hardwood on Wednesday, Jan. 6 for a hoops doubleheader at Meridian Community College.  EMCC resumes MACJC North Division action by playing host to Itawamba on Monday, Jan. 11.  Tip-off times are set for 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. at Keyes T. Currie Coliseum on the Scooba campus.
