EMCC Lady Lions top Pearl River 68-64 at Gulf Coast Classic Print E-mail
PERKINSTON – The EMCC Lady Lions won for the second time in as many days Tuesday afternoon, notching a 68-64 basketball victory over Pearl River in second-day action of the Gulf Coast Classic.

Coach Sharon Thompson’s 5-3 East Mississippi squad claimed a 70-57 win over host Mississippi Gulf Coast Monday afternoon at Weathers/Wentzell Center to snap a two-game losing skid on the year.

In Tuesday’s contest against the Lady Wildcats of PRCC, the EMCC women maintained the advantage throughout the second half after holding a 34-32 halftime edge.  The Lady Lions weren’t able to put away Pearl River in the game because of sub-par 20-of-32 shooting from the free throw line.

Individually, the Columbus tandem of Nashedra Barry and Natalie Tate topped the Lady Lions with 11 and 10 points, respectively.  Featuring balanced scoring for the second straight day in tournament action, 11 EMCC players entered the scoring column against Pearl River.  Freshman guard Shanteria Tate, from Noxubee County High School, followed with nine points, while reigning all-state forward Martika Hull and freshman guard Malashia Chandler added eight points apiece for the winners.

Following the Thanksgiving holiday, the East Mississippi basketball teams will return to action next week for a pair of road doubleheaders.  After taking on the defending state champions of Jones County Monday (Nov. 30) in Ellisville, the EMCC squads tip off MACJC North Division action next Thursday (Dec. 3) in Senatobia against Northwest Mississippi.
