| EMCC basketball teams split home doubleheader against Hinds |

 Led by Anthony Alexander’s 21 points and 19 points by Shanteria Tate, the EMCC basketball teams split a home basketball doubleheader with Hinds Monday evening at Keyes T. Currie Coliseum. The Lady Lions breezed to an 84-54 win, while the EMCC men dropped a 79-74 overtime decision in the nightcap. Coach Sharon Thompson’s Lady Lions outscored Hinds, 22-11, during the final 10 minutes of the opening half to take a double-digit lead (38-27) into halftime. After scoring 10 unanswered points to begin the second stanza, EMCC stretched the margin to 24 points (56-32) four minutes into the half and cruised from there. The Lady Bulldogs would not get any closer than 15 points the rest of the way. Freshman guard Shanteria Tate of Macon’s Noxubee County High School led a quintet of double-figure scorers with 19 points for the home team. Fellow freshmen Natalie Tate of Columbus and Shelby Crawford of Thomasville, Ala., followed with 13 points apiece, while former Southeast Lauderdale standout Martika Hull recorded her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Eryn Gray of Columbus chipped in with 10 points for the winners. As a team, the Lady Lions benefitted from 24-of-28 (86%) free-throw accuracy on the night, while shooting an improved 53 percent (16-of-30 FGs) from the field in the second half after hitting just 12-of-38 (32%) shots in the opening half. The EMCC women were also credited with 19 steals in the contest. Playing their fourth game in five days following impressive weekend wins over Pensacola (72-69) and Faulkner State (83-68) at the World Ford Classic in Pensacola, head coach Mark White’s 4-1 Lions battled from behind the entire contest before preseason NJCAA All-American CoCo Ware hit a pair of free throws with 4.3 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime tied at 64-64. After trailing 36-27 at the half and still down by nine points (55-46) with seven minutes remaining in regulation, EMCC grabbed its first lead of the contest (62-61) on a 3-pointer by freshman point guard Anthony Alexander with 1:45 on the clock. Ananza Richardson put the visitors back on top, 64-62, with a trey of his own with six seconds left to set up Ware’s game-tying charity tosses. During the extra session, Ware’s steal and resulting basket gave the Lions a 69-68 lead with 1:53 remaining. After Hinds’ Mark Wilkerson answered with a bucket, Ware had a chance to reclaim the lead for EMCC at the line. However, the Lions’ free throw troubles continued, as Ware’s pair of misses capped a lackluster 13-of-37 (35%) team shooting effort at the charity stripe. In contrast, the Bulldogs hit 7-of-8 from the free throw line over the final 32 seconds of overtime to secure the five-point road victory. Alexander, of Nashville, led the way for the Lions with 21 points aided by 5-of-12 accuracy from behind the three-point arc. Former Meridian High School standout Donovan Walker followed with 17 points and a team-high 13 rebounds, while Jonathan King scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half. The East Mississippi basketball teams stay at home for a Thursday doubleheader, as the Lady Lions welcome Shelton State and the Lions play host to Meridian Community College. Game times are set for 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at Currie Coliseum on the Scooba campus. |
