| EMCC soccer teams remain undefeated with road sweep of East Central |

On the heels of Saturday’s hat trick against Copiah-Lincoln, sophomore Renikka Ware scored during the 13th and 27th minutes of play to give the former Starkville High School standout five goals in the last two matches. All-American candidate Nikeisha Noel tallied her 10th goal of the season during the 17th minute and assisted on Ware’s first score. Noel has already totaled 24 points through EMCC’s first three matches of the year with four assists to go along with her 10 goals. Freshman goalkeeper India Whittle, of Philadelphia’s Neshoba Central High School, registered her second shutout of the season, stopping a penalty kick on East Central’s lone shot on goal of the contest. The Lady Lions moved to 2-0-1 on the year after blanking East Central, 12-0, and tying Copiah-Lincoln, 5-5, in Scooba this past weekend. In Tuesday’s nightcap, the Lions overcame first-half complacency to net six unanswered goals in the second half to move to 3-0 on the year. EMCC knocked off East Central, 9-1, and Copiah-Lincoln, 2-1, at home on Friday and Saturday, respectively. With the visitors down by a 2-0 count, EMCC freshman Eduardo Fumo cut the deficit in half by scoring his first of two goals on the afternoon in unassisted fashion during the 33rd minute. The Warriors reclaimed their two-goal advantage in the 40th minute to take a 3-1 lead into the intermission. The Lions’ six-goal attack following halftime was ignited by Josh Shields’ second goal of the year, which came eight minutes after the break. Also with a pair of assists on the day, Starkville’s Fumo connected on his fourth goal of the year two minutes later to knot the score at 3-3. Freshman Taylor Chisolm of Caledonia later tallied his first two collegiate goals three minutes apart to give the visitors the lead for good. Sophomore Leonardo Reyes continued his stellar play by netting back-to-back scores during the 67th and 70th minutes to seal EMCC’s third victory in as many matches this fall. In contrast, the Lions struggled to a 1-12-1 mark last year. While also assisting on the Lions’ first two goals of the second half, Reyes now has 16 points on the season with seven goals and two assists. Coach Junior Noel’s EMCC soccer teams take a week’s break away from competition before opening a three-match home stand next Tuesday (Sept. 8) against Southwest Mississippi. After entertaining Pearl River a day later on the Scooba campus, East Mississippi will begin MACJC North Division play at home the following Tuesday (Sept. 15) versus Hinds. |
