SCOOBA – EMCC all-region soccer standout Nikeisha Noel celebrated her 20th birthday Friday by netting a school-record eight goals in the Lady Lions’ 12-0 season-opening whitewash of visiting East Central on the Scooba campus.  The men’s team capped East Mississippi’s high-scoring season debut by claiming a convincing 9-1 home decision over the ECCC Warriors.

A sophomore from Trinidad & Tobago, Noel scored four successive goals within a 15-minute span in the opening half to stake the EMCC women to a 6-0 halftime advantage.  An NJCAA All-Region 23 performer a year ago, Noel registered four hat tricks as a freshman, including a five-goal effort in her collegiate debut during last year’s 8-1 season-opening triumph over East Central.  She completed the 2008 campaign ranked tied for 28th nationally with 19 goals in only 13 matches.

Fellow sophomore Alex Shelton of West Point tallied the other four scores for the Lady Lions in recording her first collegiate hat trick.  She also assisted on one of Noel’s goals, while Diamondhead’s Cori Arceneaux was credited with four assists.

The Lady Lions also outscored the visitors by a 6-0 tally in the second half, while only allowing two shots on goal by the Lady Warriors.

The EMCC men’s squad was nearly as dominant in also bolting to a 6-0 halftime lead.  The Lions were able to spread the wealth statistically, as sophomore Leonardo Reyes of Trinidad & Tobago netted his first collegiate hat trick with three goals while freshman Eduardo Fumo of Starkville found the net twice.

Sophomore Justin Knight of Quitman tallied a goal and assisted on two other scores, while Starkville’s Josh Shields, Seth Wood of Caledonia and Jamal Richards each added one goal.  ECCC’s lone score of the nightcap came in the 50th minute.

Coach Junior Noel’s EMCC soccer teams continue their season-opening home stand by playing host to Copiah-Lincoln Saturday on the Scooba campus.  Women’s action begins at 2 p.m., followed by the men’s match at around 4 p.m.
