SCOOBA – Utility softball standout Laura Sanderson of Farmerville, La., has signed a national letter of intent with East Mississippi Community College, as announced Thursday by EMCC head softball coach Kate Neely.
Having played shortstop, pitcher, catcher and outfield for head coach James Garsee at various times throughout her prep career at Farmerville High School, Sanderson hit .523 this past season in helping lead FHS to a 15-14 record and quarterfinal-round finish in the state tournament. The right-hander was a four-year recipient of the club’s Coaches’ Award, given annually to the team’s most valuable player, as well as having earned All-District 2-2A First Team honors during all four years of her varsity career.
To go along with her softball exploits, Sanderson also claimed Louisiana’s Class 2A state powerlifting championship for her weight division during each of the past two years. Beyond athletics, she graduated 10th in her senior class and was a member of the National Honor Society and Fellowship of Christian Athletes organizations.
Sanderson is the daughter of Larry and Nezy Sanderson of Farmerville, La. She will join fellow 2009 EMCC softball signee Celeste Fontenot of Brusly, La., as well as returning Louisiana natives Courtney Nunn and Mauri McBride of Jonesboro on the Lady Lions’ 2009-2010 softball roster.
