Whitney Sumrall of Sumrall High School signed this week to play softball for head coach Kate Neely’s EMCC Lady Lions.
SCOOBA – Sumrall’s Whitney Sumrall has signed a national letter of intent to attend East Mississippi Community College, as announced this week by EMCC head softball coach Kate Neely.

Having played third base, first base and outfield for head coach Jamie Powell at Sumrall High School, Sumrall posted a .374 career batting average as a three-year starter for the Lady Bobcats’ fast-pitch club.  As team captain this past spring, she capped her prep career by hitting .386 with 18 runs batted in as a senior to go along with her .967 fielding percentage.  In addition to receiving the school’s Senior Athletic Award, Sumrall was also the recipient of the team’s 2008-09 Sportsmanship Award.

Sumrall was also a five-year starter in slow-pitch competition for SHS, earning all-district honors as a sophomore.  While lettering four years in basketball and having served as the school’s mascot throughout her high school career, Sumrall was honored as a two-time recipient of the Martin Luther King Jr. Award, given annually to the Lamar County student-athlete who best exemplifies sportsmanship, competitiveness and citizenship within the local community.  Sumrall also received the 2008-09 Coca-Cola Scholar Athlete Award for her accomplishments in and out of the classroom.
