SCOOBA – East Mississippi Community College had 11 student-athletes earn Academic All-America recognition for the 2008-09 academic year, as announced this week by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) office headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Coach Tony Montgomery’s EMCC baseball team led the way with a pair of Distinguished Academic All-Americans and three other Academic All-Americans, as the Lions also collected All-Academic Team honors for having a composite team grade point average of better than 3.00.  Individually, reserve outfielder Brandon Williams of Hickory (3.89 GPA) and starting first baseman Cody Brownlee of Nettleton (3.81) garnered Distinguished Academic All-America status by compiling cumulative grade point averages of 3.80 or higher.

Also on the diamond for the Lions, former West Lauderdale standout Luke Walker (3.76), Preston’s Corey Luke (3.71) and Cody Bennett of Hernando (3.63) all achieved NJCAA Academic All-America honors by maintaining cumulative GPAs between 3.60 and 3.79.

Highlighting East Mississippi’s individual classroom achievements this past academic year, Lady Lion softball standouts Josie Matthews and Sara Havard of Meridian’s West Lauderdale High School both achieved perfect 4.00 cumulative grade point averages during their two-year careers on the Scooba campus.  Fellow West Lauderdale and EMCC teammate Brooke Lee (3.72) earned NJCAA Academic All-America status for head coach Kate Neely’s 24-23 Lady Lions this past season.

As a member of head women’s basketball coach Sharon Thompson’s NJCAA Tournament ballclub, Starkville’s Miari Franklin (3.69) was an Academic All-America recipient for the MACJC North Division and NJCAA Region 23 champions.

Rounding out EMCC’s list of academic honorees from this past academic year were Distinguished Academic All-American Wyatt Jenkins of Caledonia (3.85) and Academic All-American Miranda Minor (3.70) of New Hope High School, who both participated for head coach Junior Noel’s East Mississippi soccer program.
