SCOTTSBORO, Ala. – East Mississippi’s Hal Larkin saved his best for last, as the sophomore carded a 3-over-par 75 during Friday’s final round to tie for 53rd place in the 2009 NJCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championship held at Goose Pond Colony Golf Course.

A former standout at Caledonia High School, Larkin completed his consistent week of golf with an 18-over-par 306 (77-78-76-75) on the par-72, 7,100-yard layout after playing to within four strokes throughout the four days of the tournament.  After opening the competition with scores of 77 and 78, the 2009 MACJC All-State Second Team member finished his steady week of play with rounds of 76 and 75.

Larkin became the fourth EMCC golfer in school history to compete in the NJCAA Men’s Golf Championship, joining Gary Sheppard (2004), Matt King (2001) and Drew McBrayer (1999).

Rend Lake (Ill.) College’s David Griffin earned 2009 medalist honors after besting Darton (Ga.) College’s Jim Chung and Brian Affleck of Potomac State (W. Va.) in a two-hole playoff after the threesome had tied with 5-under-par scores of 283.  The top finisher from a Mississippi school was Mississippi Gulf Coast’s Corey Ward, who placed sixth with a 1-under-par 287 (68-71-77-71).

John A. Logan College of Illinois claimed the team title with a 9-over-par score of 1,161, finishing three strokes ahead of runner-up Darton College and a dozen shots better than third-place South Mountain (Ariz.) Community College.  NJCAA Region 23 winner Mississippi Gulf Coast placed ninth with a 47-over-par 1,199 during the four-day event.
