![]() EMCC sophomore Hal Larkin of Caledonia will compete in this week’s NJCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championship in Scottsboro, Ala. A sophomore on head coach Dale Peay’s regional runner-up Lions squad, Larkin qualified as one of 37 individual golfers set to compete in the national tournament by finishing in a fifth-place tie at the EMCC-hosted NJCAA Region 23 Golf Championship held three weeks ago at the MSU Golf Course in Starkville. A total of 17 Division II teams will also be competing at this week’s championship event. Larkin, a product of Caledonia High School, is ready to become the fourth golfer in East Mississippi Community College history to participate in the NJCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championship. Most recently, Gary Sheppard tied for 58th place (77-78-72-82=309) at the 2004 national tournament held in Arizona. Currently working as a professional golf instructor in Texas, former New Hope High School standout Matt King finished in a 72nd-place tie (83-74-78-78=313) at the 2001 event played in Texas. Currently teaching and coaching at New Hope, former EMCC linkster Drew McBrayer competed in the 1999 national tournament held in North Carolina. A 2009 MACJC All-State Second Team member, Larkin completed the spring’s regular-season slate ranked 10th among Mississippi’s community college golfers with a composite 76.7 stroke average. Larkin was joined on this year’s all-state squad by EMCC freshman teammate Jordan Jamar of Bossier City, La. Prior to his fifth-place tie in the regional tournament, Larkin capped the regular season by earning all-tournament honors with a second-place showing at Shiloh Ridge Golf Club in Corinth. He also tied for seventh place at the MACJC event held at Wolf Hollow Golf Club in Wesson. The previous site of the NJCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championship for three straight years (2005-07), Goose Pond Colony Golf Course is a George Cobb design that opened in 1971. With a four-star rating by Golf Digest magazine, the course is located on the banks of the Tennessee River’s scenic Lake Guntersville and nestled into the Cumberland Mountains. Daily results from this week’s NJCAA Division II Golf Championship will be available online at www.goosepond.org/njcaa.html. |
