Head coach Dale Peay’s host EMCC Lions placed second at this week’s NJCAA Region 23 Golf Championship held at the MSU Golf Course in Starkville.
STARKVILLE – The host East Mississippi Lions made a 14-stroke improvement during Tuesday's final round at the Mississippi State University Golf Course to claim team runner-up honors at the 2009 NJCAA Region 23 Golf Championship.

Trailing 2009 MACJC state champion Copiah-Lincoln by two strokes heading into final-round action, head coach Dale Peay’s EMCC squad carded a 305 Tuesday to finish a dozen strokes ahead of Co-Lin (624-636).  Firing team scores of 304 and 302, Mississippi Gulf Coast successfully defended its NJCAA Region 23 team title with this week’s 18-stroke victory over the host Lions.  The Bulldogs will represent Region 23 at the 2009 NJCAA National Championship, May 19-22, at Goose Pond Colony Golf Course in Scottsboro, Ala.

EMCC sophomore Hal Larkin, an MACJC All-State Second Team member, tied for the best round of the day by firing a 1-over-par 73 to claim one of the five individual qualifying spots for the upcoming NJCAA National Championship.  The Caledonia High School product tied for fifth with a two-day total of 152 (79-73), but lost in a playoff with Co-Lin's Ryan Ratcliff to decide the fifth member of the 2009 NJCAA All-Region 23 Team.

MGCCC's Richie Williams fired rounds of 72 and 74 to beat teammate Corey Ward (75-73—148) by two shots for individual medalist honors.  Hinds' Elliott Bingham (71-78) and Gulf Coast's Nic Ishee (74-75) tied for third place with 149 totals.  Williams, Ward and Ishee of Gulf Coast were joined on the 2009 NJCAA All-Region 23 Team by Bingham and Ratcliff.


Rounding out the team finishers at the par-72, 6,888-yard MSU layout were Northeast Mississippi (327-310—637) and Hinds (322-316) in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

Joining EMCC’s Larkin as individual qualifiers from Region 23 for next month’s NJCAA National Championship were Bingham, Ratcliff, Northeast Mississippi's Blake Hatfield (81-74—155) and Grant Goforth of Northwest Mississippi (76-80—156).

Mississippi Gulf Coast's Tommy Snell was named 2009 NJCAA Region 23 Coach of the Year.

East Mississippi freshmen Jordan Jamar of Bossier City, La. (80-77) and Will Black of Calhoun City (82-75) tied for ninth place with scores of 157.  Rounding out the Lions’ regional scorecard this week in Starkville were Brandon’s Garrett Alford (78-80—158) and Trey Adams of Belmont (85-86—171).
