SCOOBA, Miss. – East Mississippi Community College will host the 2009 NJCAA Region 23 Golf Championship Monday and Tuesday at the Mississippi State University Golf Course.

Head coach Dale Peay’s EMCC Lions will compete on the par-72, 6,889-yard MSU layout against teams from Copiah-Lincoln, Hinds, Mississippi Gulf Coast and Northeast Mississippi.  The MGCCC Bulldogs are the defending Region 23 golf champions.

Along with the five qualifying teams, the Northwest Mississippi tandem of Eric Ainsworth and Grant Goforth, East Central’s Daniel Johnson, Will Goff of Holmes and Itawamba’s Alex Rowland will compete as individuals during the two-day tournament.

The top scoring team from the Region 23 event will qualify for the NJCAA National Tournament to be played May 19-22 at Goose Pond Colony Golf Course in Scottsboro, Ala.  The next five individuals who are not members of the qualifying team will also earn berths to the national tournament.  The MACJC’s 2009 Hubert Tucker Award recipient, Gulf Coast’s Richie Williams automatically qualifies for the national tournament as the state’s regular-season stroke average leader (72.8).

As a team, the East Mississippi Lions qualified for the Region 23 tourney with a third-place team finish at the MACJC State Championship held at Kirkwood National Golf Club in Holly Springs.  For the spring season, EMCC claimed three third-place team finishes plus a runner-up showing at Shiloh Ridge Golf Club in Corinth to end the regular season.

Individually this spring, EMCC has been led by 2009 MACJC All-State Second Team members Jordan Jamar and Hal Larkin.  A freshman from Bossier City, La., Jamar compiled a team-leading 76.5 regular-season stroke average, followed closely by Larkin’s 76.7 spring average.  Larkin, a sophomore, is a Caledonia High School product.

Rounding out the Lions’ lineup this week in Starkville will be Calhoun City’s Will Black (77.9), Trey Adams (79.7) of Belmont and Garrett Alford (79.9) of Brandon’s Northwest Rankin High School.
