|EMCC falls to Gulf Coast in first round of MACJC State Softball Tournament|
WESSON, Miss. – The EMCC Lady Lions fell victim to five errors Friday night in dropping a 9-2 first-round decision to Mississippi Gulf Coast in the 2009 MACJC State Softball Tournament hosted by Copiah-Lincoln.
Seeded third in the North Division with a 15-9 league mark, East Mississippi fell behind early after giving up a pair of unearned runs in the first inning. After leading off with a single off EMCC starter Teddie Eden, Gulf Coast’s Tiffany Fuller came all the way around to score on Lacey Mangrum’s throwing error of Holly Lawrence’s grounder. Lawrence scored one batter later on Julie Mercer’s sacrifice fly.
The No. 2 seed out of the South Division, the Lady Bulldogs broke open the 2-0 contest with four more runs in the third inning. Mercer’s bases-loaded sacrifice fly – her second of the game – was followed by a three-run home run by Megan Colvin to increase the margin to 6-0.
After managing just a third-inning single by Alex Shelton off starter Brittany Fields through the first four innings, the Lady Lions got on the scoreboard with a pair of tallies in the fifth. West Point’s Angel Little led off the frame with a single, advanced to second on a fielding error and moved to third on Mangrum’s sacrifice bunt. Shelton, also a product of West Point High School, singled home Little and later scored on Linsey Upton’s two-out RBI single after stealing second. Shelton had two of the team’s six singles on the evening.
EMCC’s defensive difficulties proved costly again late in the contest, as three more Lady Lion miscues helped contribute to three additional runs off reliever Courtney Nunn in the sixth inning to account for the 9-2 outcome.
Making the program’s first state tournament appearance since 2002, head coach Kate Neely’s 2009 EMCC Lady Lions completed the campaign with a 24-23 overall record, including winning 10 of their last 13 decisions on the year.
