|EMCC Lions drop pair on diamond to sixth-ranked Itawamba|
FULTON, Miss. – The EMCC baseball team didn’t have an answer for sixth-ranked Itawamba’s quest at another North Division baseball title, falling 10-0 and 11-1 on the road to the Indians Saturday afternoon in divisional play.
With the run-rule sweep of the visiting Lions, Itawamba clinched its sixth North Division regular-season title in the last seven seasons.
In the opener, a two-run home run by starting pitcher Josh Chism ignited a seven-run second inning by ICC. The Indians sent a dozen batters to the plate in the second, which also featured four doubles. Itawamba added a solo home run by Wesley McCullough in the third and a pair of scores the following frame to account for the 10-run deficit after five innings.
Chism improved to 9-0 on the season, while starter Drake Gregory of New Hope took the loss for the Lions. In facing just three batters over the minimum through five innings, Chism allowed just a first-inning double by Nathan Peden and an infield single by Brandon Kiewel in the fifth. He finished with seven strikeouts and two bases on balls.
In the nightcap, ICC jumped on East Mississippi starter Corey Luke for four first-inning runs, keyed by a three-run home run by Justin Bryant. The Indians, now 36-8 overall and 19-1 in North Division play on the year, reached Luke for five more runs while batting around in the fourth. After EMCC plated its only run of the afternoon in the fifth on an RBI-single by Brandon Williams following a two-out double by Luke Walker, Itawamba managed to again end the game early via the 10-run rule with two more scores off reliever Cody Pounders to begin the fifth inning.
ICC starter Joseph Koon scattered four hits over five innings, while fanning four and walking a pair, in the second contest to improve to 7-1 on the year.
Head coach Tony Montgomery’s EMCC Lions, now 9-35 overall and 4-15 in North Division action on the year, close out their 2009 home slate Tuesday by playing host to Holmes in a twin bill set to begin at 1 p.m. on the Scooba campus. East Mississippi winds up the regular season by traveling to Mississippi Delta on Saturday.
