| Neshoba Central's Leigh Ellen Barefield signs with EMCC Softball |

![]() Leigh Ellen Barefield – EMCC’s most recent softball signee – is competing with her Neshoba Central teammates this week in the Class 4A state playoffs. A starting outfielder for head coach Lee Killen’s 16-7 NCHS’s Lady Rockets, Barefield is currently ranked second on the team with a .408 batting average, including eight doubles and two triples, along with a club-high 15 runs batted in. The Neshoba Central team is presently competing in the third round of the Class 4A state playoffs, traveling to district foe Kosciusko on Saturday. A five-year varsity member of the Neshoba Central softball team, Barefield was a member of the Lady Rockets’ state championship teams of 2006 and 2005 under the guidance of former head coach Tommy Holland. A year ago, she received the coveted Lady Rocket Award and was also a recipient of the team’s Most Improved Player Award in 2007. Last summer, Barefield competed on a Carthage-based fast-pitch team that claimed the Dixie Youth 18 & Under State Championship. Off the field, Barefield is ranked third in Neshoba Central High School’s graduating class of 180 seniors and was a 2008 Girls State Delegate. In addition, she is a member of the school’s Mu Alpha Theta mathematics honor society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes organization, Beta Club and Spanish Club. The daughter and David and Ann Barefield of Preston, she joins previously announced EMCC softball signees Megan Ladner (Poplarville HS), Chelsea Theriot (Poplarville HS), DeShuni Sanders (Hew Hope HS), Mallory Pace (Northeast Lauderdale HS), Justine Jenkins (Caledonia HS), Katie Newman (Oak Hill Academy), Courtney Castleberry (Clarkdale HS), and Celeste Fontenot (Brusly [La.] HS). |
