The Poplarville High School softball tandem of Megan Ladner and Chelsea Theriot will begin their collegiate careers together at East Mississippi Community College after signing with the Lady Lions Tuesday.
SCOOBA, Miss. – Poplarville High School softball teammates Megan Ladner and Chelsea Theriot have signed national letters-of-intent to attend East Mississippi Community College.  The signings were announced Tuesday by EMCC head softball coach Kate Neely.

Playing for head coach Jonathan Ray at Poplarville High School, Ladner and Theriot are key members of the Lady Hornets’ 25-3 club that finished the 2009 regular season ranked second in the state and is currently competing in the third round of the Class 4A state playoffs.

A right-handed pitcher and utility player, Ladner currently owns a 20-3 record and 0.60 earned run average as a senior for PHS.  With 211 strikeouts and only 19 bases on balls on the year, she has thrown three no-hitters, including one perfect game.  Offensively, she is hitting .365 this season with 19 runs batted in, four doubles and a triple.

A four-time selection to the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) All-Division 8-4A fast-pitch and slow-pitch teams, Ladner was named to last year’s All-Region 8-4A fast-pitch team as well as earning MHSAA All-State slow-pitch honors.  She has been chosen to compete on this year’s South 4A/5A Fast-pitch All-Star Team.

A year ago in United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) slow-pitch competition during the Girls 16 & Under Youth World Tournament, Ladner was selected the Defensive MVP as an All-Tournament Team member playing for the Petal-based Southern Twisters club.

Theriot, who plays third base for the Poplarville Lady Hornets, is currently hitting .419, including a team-high nine doubles and two triples, with 23 RBI.  A three-time All-Region 8-4A slow-pitch selection and twice chosen to the all-region fast-pitch squad, she has been picked for this year’s South 4A/5A Slow-pitch All-Star Team.

A recipient of numerous team awards during her PHS career, Theriot most recently garnered last year’s Pete Jackson Coaches’ Award during the slow-pitch campaign.  In 2007, she collected the Lady Hornets’ Most Unheralded honor for her fast-pitch contributions and received the club’s Leadership Award in slow-pitch.

Ladner and Theriot join previously announced EMCC softball signees DeShuni Sanders (New Hope HS), Mallory Pace (Northeast Lauderdale HS), Justine Jenkins (Caledonia HS), Katie Newman (Oak Hill Academy), Courtney Castleberry (Clarkdale HS), and Celeste Fontenot (Brusly [La.] HS).
