|EMCC Lady Lions post lopsided road sweep of Coahoma|
In their third road twin bill over a four-day span, the Lady Lions run-ruled CCC by scores of 16-2 and 18-0.CLARKSDALE, Miss. – The East Mississippi softball team improved to 9-7 in North Division play with a convincing doubleheader road sweep of Coahoma Friday afternoon.
The day prior, EMCC earned a Thursday doubleheader split at Itawamba by claiming a 7-3 victory in the nightcap after dropping a 3-1 decision in the first game. In their first of four straight North Division doubleheaders coming away from home, the Lady Lions fell by scores of 9-1 and 12-4 Tuesday at Northeast Mississippi.
In Friday’s opening contest at Coahoma, EMCC’s Regan Shows of Beaumont capped a nine-run third inning by smacking a two-out grand slam. West Lauderdale product Jessica Vick hit her second home run of the week with a two-run shot in the contest, while also adding a run-scoring double.
Sophomore pitcher Brooke Lee, a former West Lauderdale standout, worked all four innings in the opening contest for the Lady Lions, allowing just a fourth-inning single to go along with her six strikeouts and three walks.
In the nightcap, EMCC pushed across five runs in the second followed by seven more in the third to contribute to the lopsided shutout. Shows, a transfer from Jones County Junior College by way of Perry Central High School, went 2-for-4 in the second game with a two-run double in the first inning and another two-bagger in the fourth. New Hope product Linsey Upton added a pair of singles in the second contest.
Freshman right-hander Courtney Nunn, of Jonesboro, La., earned the victory in the nightcap, only giving up a pair of fourth-inning singles while striking out five Coahoma hitters and issuing just one base on balls.
Coach Kate Neely’s EMCC Lady Lions, now 16-20 overall, play their fourth divisional road doubleheader in a week’s span by competing at Mississippi Delta on Monday in a make-up date from an earlier postponement due to inclement weather. East Mississippi will play host to Itawamba in a Wednesday doubleheader set to begin at 3 p.m. on the Scooba campus.
