| EMCC's Angelique Burtts earns NJCAA All-American hoops honor |

.jpg "Image") Sophomore forward Angelique Burtts has capped an honor-filled hoops campaign by being named to the 2008-09 NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball All-American Third Team. A 5-foot-11 forward from Conyers, Ga., Burtts has made the most of her one year on EMCC’s Scooba campus after transferring from Middle Tennessee State University. The former McDonald’s All-American nominee from Rockdale County High School in Georgia led head coach Sharon Thompson’s 25-7 EMCC Lady Lions in scoring at 15.5 points per game and ranked second in rebounding at 7.9 boards an outing this past season. In also being selected to the 10-member All-NJCAA Region 23 Team and to the five-player All-MACJC North State First Team, Burtts proved to be a vital member of an East Mississippi club that advanced to the 16-team field of the 2009 NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship in Salina, Kan. In recording a team-high 10 double-doubles on the season, Burtts nearly averaged a double-double (14.3 ppg and 9.5 rpg) in eight postseason tournament games to help pace EMCC to the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament championship as well as to the regular-season title of the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) North Division. A 31-game starter for the Lady Lions as a sophomore, Burtts topped EMCC with 72 steals and 22 made 3-pointers, along with leading the club in free throw accuracy at 70.3 percent for the year. She also finished second on the team with 70 assists and 19 blocked shots on the season. With 10 outings of 20 or more points in 2008-09, Burtts tallied a career-high 27 points on 8-of-14 field goals and 10-of-11 charity tosses in EMCC’s home divisional win over Holmes. She also had 10 games with double-digit rebounds this past year, including a career-most 19 boards – to go along with 24 points on 10-of-14 field goals – in the Lady Lions’ overtime victory at North Division foe Northwest Mississippi. Burtts will continue her collegiate career playing for head coach Lea Henry at Colonial Athletic Association member Georgia State University in Atlanta.
