SCOOBA, Miss. -- Standout point guard Deonte Alexander of Nashville’s Glencliff High School has signed a national letter-of-intent with East Mississippi Community College, as announced Thursday by EMCC men’s basketball coach Mark White.

A 6-foot, 170-pound playmaker, Alexander averaged 20.1 points per game for head coach Tony Sowell’s Glencliff Colts this past season, including high-scoring efforts of 41 points against Hunters Lane and 33 points versus Antioch.  Selected to compete in this year’s Music City All-Star Classic, Alexander was chosen as the 2008-09 District 12AAA MVP as an All-Region 6AAA Team member.  He was also a McDonald’s All-American nominee and is ranked among the state’s top 20 senior prospects by the Tennessee Prep Hoops recruiting service.

“Deonte has a chance to be a very special basketball player,” EMCC’s White said.  “He is a true point guard who likes to distribute the basketball, and he can also score from the ‘2’ guard position.  Deonte has an outstanding work ethic and comes from a tremendous family background.

“(EMCC assistant coach) Jeremy Shulman is from Nashville and has known Deonte and his wonderful family for several years,” White added.  “Jeremy’s tireless recruiting efforts and his long-standing association with the Tennessee AAU ranks has enabled us to welcome Deonte to the EMCC basketball family.”

Along with his high school accomplishments in Nashville, Alexander also starred on the AAU circuit with the Midstate Ballerz Elite basketball program.

Alexander joins previously announced EMCC men’s basketball signees Donovan Walker, a 6-foot-4, 190-pound guard/forward from Meridian High School, and Joe McCoy, a 6-foot-1, 200-pound guard out of Raymond High School.
