SCOOBA, Miss. – EMCC head baseball coach Tony Montgomery announced this week that West Point High School pitcher Demontez Calvert, pitcher/first baseman Cole Vaughan of Heritage Academy, and Heidelberg Academy middle infielder/pitcher Jamie Keenan have signed national letters-of-intent with the Lions.

A 6-foot-4 right-hander, Calvert has been in the Green Wave’s starting rotation since his freshman season.  This season for head coach Buddy Wyers’ West Point club, Calvert owns a 3.65 earned run average with 35 strikeouts and only 13 walks in 25 innings of work.  A two-time recipient of the Pitcher’s Award as the club’s most valuable hurler, Calvert posted a 2.43 ERA with 42 strikeouts and but a dozen bases on balls in 39 innings a year ago as a junior.  He also averaged around eight points and a team-leading 10.8 rebounds per game for head coach Winston Varnado’s West Point basketball club this past season.

Vaughan, a first cousin of EMCC freshman shortstop/pitcher Drew Vaughan, is presently hitting a team-best .420 with a .742 slugging percentage for head coach Steve Hancock’s Heritage Patriots.  On the mound, the left-hander is currently 2-3 on the year with a 2.96 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 26 innings.

Set to be reunited with former Heidelberg Academy standout Derek Beach at East Mississippi, Keenan owns a current .491 batting average with 28 runs batted in and 31 runs scored for head coach Jim Fries’ 15-6 Rebels.  An All-District 4 selection among the Mississippi Private School Association (MPSA) ranks a year ago, the right-handed Keenan is also 4-2 on the mound with a 2.21 ERA this season.

East Mississippi’s most recent additions are joined by previously announced EMCC baseball signees Tyler Aldridge of Caledonia High School, Southeast Lauderdale’s Noah Greer, and Kameron Heiser of West Lauderdale High School.
