Coach Dale Peay’s Lions earned a berth in this year’s NJCAA Region 23 Golf Championship by placing third in this week’s MACJC State Championship held in Holly Springs.
HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. – The EMCC men’s golf team earned a berth in the 2009 NJCAA Region 23 Championship by claiming a third-place team finish at the MACJC State Championship held Monday and Tuesday at Kirkwood National Golf Club.

Battling blustery weather conditions during the two-day event, head coach Dale Peay’s Lions carded consistent rounds of 334 and 335 to finish three strokes behind runner-up Mississippi Gulf Coast.  Copiah-Lincoln captured the team title with a composite 655 total (329-326) on the par-72, 6,640-yard layout.

Second-team all-state selection Jordan Jamar of Bossier City, La., paced East Mississippi by finishing in a tie for fourth place (79-82—161) with MGCCC’s Corey Ward.  Elliott Bingham of Hinds earned individual medalist honors with a 1-stroke victory (158-159) over Co-Lin’s Derin Petite.

Belmont’s Trey Adams tied for 11th place individually (84-81—165), while Brandon’s Garrett Alford finished in a 19th-place tie for the Lions.  Caledonia’s Hal Larkin, EMCC’s other second-team all-state performer this spring, tied for 27th with a 174 effort (87-87).  East Mississippi’s state tournament scorecard was rounded out by Will Black of Calhoun City with a 31st-place showing (91-85—176).

Finishing fourth and fifth,
respectively, at this week’s state tournament in Holly Springs, Northeast Mississippi and Hinds also earned team spots in this year’s regional tournament.  The 2009 NJCAA Region 23 Golf Championship will be held April 27-28 at the Mississippi State University Golf Course in Starkville.
