![]() In their first trip to the NJCAA Basketball Tournament since 1978, the 12th-seeded EMCC Lady Lions will meet fifth-seeded and undefeated Walters State during Wednesday’s opening-round action in Salina, Kan. On the heels of claiming the NJCAA Region 23 championship last week in Clinton, Miss., head coach Sharon Thompson’s 24-5 EMCC Lady Lions will take on fifth-seeded Walters State Community College at noon CT on Wednesday, March 18, at the 7,000-seat Bicentennial Center in Salina. The five-day tournament will be played using a false double-elimination format. The winner of Wednesday’s EMCC-WSCC contest will advance to meet the first-round winner between Chipola, Fla. (#4 seed) and Sheridan, Wyo. (#13 seed) on Thursday (March 19) at 8 p.m. CT. The losers of the two opening-round games pitting the same four teams will face other on Thursday at 2 p.m. CT. From Morristown, Tenn., the Lady Senators of Walters State will enter next week’s NJCAA tournament sporting a perfect 30-0 record after claiming the TCCAA/NJCAA Region VII championship in Cleveland, Tenn. Guided by head coach Dave Kragel, Walters State will be making its third consecutive appearance in the national tournament and fourth trip in the last five years. The Lady Senators were ranked third nationally in the final regular-season NJCAA Division I women’s basketball poll. East Mississippi’s last appearance in the NJCAA women’s basketball tournament came in 1978 when the EMJC Lionettes, under the guidance of current Pearl River Community College athletic director/men’s basketball coach Richard Mathis, went 31-0 before falling in the national championship game to Panola (Texas) Junior College. 2009 NJCAA DIVISION I WOMEN’S BASKETBALL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP INFORMATION The Championship will take place at the Bicentennial Center in Salina, Kansas Tuesday through Saturday, March 17-21, 2009. Sixteen teams will qualify to participate in the 2009 NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship. These sixteen teams will come from the following districts (regions): District A (1); B (2); C (3,4,12,20); D (5); E (6); F (7); G (8); H (9); I (10, 15, 17); J (11, 13); K (14); L (16); M (18); N (22); O (23); and P (24). All sixteen (16) teams will be seeded into the tournament on the basis of (in no particular order), regional placement in the national tournament the previous year; strength of district; national poll; overall and JUCO record. The seeding committee will consist of eight (8) sectional directors.
