| EMCC softball sweeps Northeast in home divisional doubleheader |

SCOOBA, Miss. – Spurred by a pair of complete-game pitching efforts and 21 total hits, the EMCC Lady Lions swept Northeast Mississippi by scores of 9-1 and 10-1 in North Division softball action Tuesday afternoon on the Scooba campus.
With the sweep of the Lady Tigers, coach Kate Neely’s East Mississippi squad extended its home winning streak to six consecutive games and evened the club’s North Division record at 2-2 on the year. A week ago, the Lady Lions swept both Hinds (11-5 and 18-0) and Jones County (3-1 and 10-1) at home, before dropping a pair of divisional road decisions to Northwest Mississippi (7-6 and 4-1) this past weekend. In Tuesday’s opener against Northeast, the Lady Lions plated four runs in the first inning to supply all the runs freshman right-hander Courtney Nunn would need in the 9-1 victory. EMCC added an unearned run in the third, followed by four more tallies in the sixth frame before the contest was halted with one out because of softball’s eight-run mercy rule. The top third of East Mississippi’s batting order accounted for six of the team’s eight hits in the opener, highlighted by Alex Shelton’s 3-for-4 effort at the plate. The former West Point High School standout drove in three runs with a trio of singles. A product of Jonesboro, La., Nunn scattered five hits and did not issue a walk, while surrendering just one unearned run in the sixth and striking out nine NEMCC batters. The Lady Lions scored early and often in the nightcap as well to lead 6-0 after three innings. That margin was more than enough for sophomore starter Brooke Lee, as the former West Lauderdale performer spread out six hits and one earned run over six innings to get the 10-1 victory. Lee also did some damage at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three runs batted in, including a two-run double in the sixth that ended the second game due to the mercy rule once again. For the day, Lee went 5-for-7 with four RBI and three runs scored. Shelton added three more singles and a walk in the nightcap, along with an RBI and a stolen base, to cap a 6-for-7 hitting performance on the afternoon. Freshman Portia Randle of Starkville was a perfect 3-for-3, including a double, with four RBI in the second game, while West Lauderdale product Josie Matthews and Summer Frost of Maben each collected two hits to round out EMCC’s 13-hit attack. The 8-12 Lady Lions continue their home stand by playing host to divisional foe Coahoma Thursday afternoon in a twin bill slated to begin at 1 p.m. on the Scooba campus. |
