SCOOBA, Miss. – In recognition of one of the most successful campaigns in the school’s recent basketball history, four East Mississippi Community College players have collected postseason honors.  The awards were announced this week after a collective vote of the state’s community college basketball coaches.

For MACJC Coach of the Year Sharon Thompson’s NJCAA Tournament-bound Lady Lions, sophomore forward Angelique Burtts was selected to the 10-member All-NJCAA Region 23 Team as well as being voted to the five-player All-MACJC North State First Team.  The Georgia State signee leads the 24-5 EMCC women’s team in scoring (15.6 ppg), rebounding (7.7 rpg), steals (2.4 spg), 3-pointers made (18), free-throw percentage (70.5%), and double-doubles (8).  The Conyers, Ga., native also ranks second on the club in field-goal percentage (48.3%), assists (61) and blocks (18).  Most recently, the 5-foot-11 standout recorded her third double-double in five postseason games with 20 points and 13 rebounds in last Thursday’s 52-43 victory over No. 9 Copiah-Lincoln in the championship game of the NJCAA Region 23 Basketball Tournament played in Clinton.

Lady Lion forward Martika Hull joined Burtts on the 2008-09 All-MACJC North State First Team.  A former standout at Meridian’s Southeast Lauderdale High School, Hull ranks as EMCC’s second-leading scorer (13.4 ppg) and No. 3 rebounder (7.3 rpg) on the year.  With seven double-doubles this season, the 5-foot-11 freshman also stands among the nation’s leaders in field-goal percentage (62.5%).  In this past week’s Region 23 tournament, Hull averaged a double-double (15.7 ppg & 10.0 rpg) and shot 71.4 percent (20-of-28 FGs) from the field as an all-tournament selection.

For head coach Mark White’s 17-11 Lions, who advanced to the semifinals of both the MACJC State Tournament and NJCAA Region 23 Tournament, freshman guard Coco Ware of Starkville was named to the 10-member All-NJCAA Region 23 Team as well as being selected to the five-man All-MACJC North State First Team.  The former Starkville High School performer ranks among the NJCAA’s leaders in scoring (19.1 ppg) and steals (3.0 spg).  Ware also stood second on the team in rebounding (6.5 rpg), in addition to making a team-most 67 three-point field goals and shooting 71.3 percent from the charity stripe for the season.

Fellow Starkville native Woodie Howard was chosen by the state’s head coaches to the 2008-09 All-MACJC North State Second Team.  The 6-foot-2 swing player paced the Lions in rebounding (7.9 rpg) and was the team’s third-leading scorer (11.6 ppg) on the year as a 54-percent shooter from the field.  Howard topped the 2008-09 EMCC squad with seven double-doubles, including a 29-point, 17-rebound effort in the Lions’ 83-75 comeback victory over Southern-Shreveport in the opening round of the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament.
