| Lady Lion softball team drops pair at home to Pearl River |

.jpg "Image") The EMCC Lady Lions will play host to Hinds and Jones County this week at the EMCC softball field on the Scooba campus. In the opening contest, the visiting Lady Wildcats reached EMCC starter Teddie Eden for a run in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly by Baleigh Volking. Two innings later, Volking followed Virginia Blanchet’s run-scoring single with another sacrifice fly to give Pearl River a 3-0 advantage. The Lady Lions’ lone score of the first game came in the sixth inning when Alex Mallette of Saltillo capped a 2-for-3 outing by scoring on a passed ball after reaching on a double. EMCC’s other two hits in the opener were fourth-inning singles by former West Lauderdale standouts Jessica Vick and Josie Matthews. PRCC added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by Katie Barrett that scored Laurin Locke. Having reached on a triple in front of Barrett, Locke was the game’s offensive star with a 3-for-4 effort and scoring three runs. Eden took the loss for the Lady Lions, giving up four earned runs on eight hits, along with striking out eight Pearl River batters and walking just one. In the nightcap, the visitors took advantage of seven unearned runs coming after two outs were recorded in the third en route to sweeping the Lady Lions in a contest shortened by an inning due to the 10-run mercy rule. With four different hitters collecting two hits apiece, Pearl River banged out a dozen total hits in the second game, including three doubles and a home run. Vick had both of East Mississippi’s base hits in the nightcap with a second-inning single and a two-run double the following frame. Following Vick’s two-bagger, Pearl River starter Katie Barrett retired the final 11 EMCC batters to record the victory. Victimized by the seven unearned runs in the third frame, freshman right-hander Courtney Nunn of Jonesboro, La., was saddled with the loss for the Lady Lions. With postponement of their scheduled Friday doubleheader at Copiah-Lincoln, coach Kate Neely’s 2-10 Lady Lions will play host to Hinds and Jones County on Monday and Wednesday, respectively, in doubleheaders set to commence at 1 p.m. on the Scooba campus. |
