![]() The Lady Lion softball team hosts doubleheaders at the EMCC Softball Field Wednesday and Thursday. On Wednesday, coach Kate Neely’s 2-6 Lady Lions meet SMCC in a single game beginning at noon, followed by a 4 p.m. contest against MMI. In a rescheduled twin bill from an earlier postponement because of rain, East Mississippi will play host to Pearl River in a Thursday doubleheader set to begin at 3 p.m. All games will be played at the EMCC Softball Field on the Scooba campus. Following a doubleheader split at Jones County on Saturday, the Lady Lions most recently earned a doubleheader split at East Central to begin the current week. After dropping a 6-5 decision in the opening contest at Decatur despite a valiant comeback attempt, EMCC did pull off a seventh-inning comeback by claiming a 10-8 victory over the Lady Warriors in the nightcap. In Monday’s second game on the ECCC campus, the Lady Lions rallied from an 8-5 deficit to push across five runs in the final inning to earn the split. EMCC chased East Central starter Amber Smith with four singles and a walk to begin the seventh inning. Following consecutive bases-loaded singles by Brooke Lee of West Lauderdale and Saltillo’s Alex Mallette, former East Webster standout Summer Frost stroked a two-run double to put the visitors on top to stay. Linsey Upton of Columbus’ New Hope High School added an insurance run with a run-producing sacrifice fly. The five runs plated in the seventh inning marked the second five-run frame for the Lady Lions in the nightcap. EMCC’s five-run fourth was keyed by a three-run home run by Mallette, her second round-tripper of the year. Lee worked the entire second game on the mound to earn the victory for the Lady Lions. In scattering 11 hits over seven innings, Lee opened the final frame by hitting a batter and giving up a single. However, the sophomore right-hander settled down to retire the next three batters to secure the win for the visitors. In Monday’s opening contest on the ECCC campus, East Mississippi couldn’t quite totally recover from a 6-1 deficit. With the Lady Lions trailing by five runs heading into the final inning, Frost capped a 3-for-4 outing with a two-out, three-run homer to left field to pull the visitors to within one tally. However, Lee bounced out to the pitcher to thwart EMCC’s late-game rally. |
