| EMCC gains doubleheader split with Mississippi Gulf Coast in home baseball opener |

.jpg "Image") Freshman catcher David Williams capped a four-hit afternoon with a game-winning RBI single to help lead the Lions to a 6-5 victory in the second game of a home baseball doubleheader against Mississippi Gulf Coast. In the second game, MGCCC took the early lead on a two-out, two-run home run by Jeremy Hill in the top of the first inning. With the visitors stranding six runners on base through the first three innings, the Lions took advantage of some wildness by Bulldog starter Bryan Babin by plating four runs in the bottom of the second. After Zane Cradic of Northeast Lauderdale opened the frame with a home run, EMCC loaded the bases with two singles and a walk. Babin walked in two runs before giving way to Michael Baxter. Chase Pearson of Hatley knocked in the fourth run of the inning with a sacrifice fly. Starter Derek Beach of Heidelberg pitched into the fourth inning for the Lions before giving the ball to Amory’s Austin Riggs. Following Skylor Burts’ RBI single, MGCCC catcher Patrick Kirkland put the Bulldogs back on top, 5-4, with a two-out, two-run triple to center field. With Riggs holding Gulf Coast to just one single through the fifth and sixth innings, EMCC knotted the score with a Pearson single and a run-scoring opposite field double by preseason third-team NJCAA All-American Nathan Peden. With two outs in the fifth, Hernando’s David Williams capped a 3-for-3 outing in the second game by scoring Peden with an RBI single. Riggs picked up his second win of the season by allowing just one run on three hits, while striking out a pair of batters, in three innings of middle relief. Sophomore closer Drake Gregory of New Hope picked up his second save of the year by working a scoreless seventh inning for East Mississippi. In Saturday’s opening contest, the Bulldogs sent 11 batters to the plate in putting together a six-run sixth inning to break open a tight 1-0 contest. EMCC’s lone tally in the first game came on a two-out RBI single in the sixth by Williams following Billy Beard’s double. Starter Tyler Richardson took the loss for the Lions in giving up four runs on five hits through five-plus innings. Having snapped their nine-game losing skid with Saturday’s victory, coach Tony Montgomery’s 2-9 EMCC Lions stay at home to play host to Southwest Mississippi in a Thursday doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on the Scooba campus. |
