ELLISVILLE, Miss. – The East Mississippi softball team split a doubleheader at Jones County Saturday afternoon, winning 1-0 in the opener for its first win of the season and falling by a 6-1 score in the nightcap.

Freshman right-hander Courtney Nunn of Jonesboro, La., went the distance in the opener, scattering three singles and two walks along with striking out eight JCJC batters in picking up the complete-game victory.

Recording eight hits in the first contest, the Lady Lions plated the game’s lone run in the fifth inning.  Capping a three-hit outing in the opener, Jessica Vick of West Lauderdale singled before giving way to freshman Alex Shelton as the courtesy runner.  The former West Point High School standout promptly stole second and third base before scoring on Brooke Lee’s run-producing single.

West Lauderdale’s Lee and Lacey Mangrum of Hernando each added a pair of singles in the day’s opening game.

In the nightcap, the Lady Bobcats reached EMCC reliever Teddie Eden for two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth inning to break open a 1-1 contest.  Nunn, the winner in the first game, gave way to Eden in the fifth inning after allowing two hits and one run, while walking just one batter and striking out three.

With the visitors managing just five singles in the second game, the Lady Lions tallied their lone run of the nightcap on Vick’s run-scoring hit in the fifth inning.

Coach Kate Neely’s 1-5 EMCC Lady Lions begin a busy week of softball action with a Monday doubleheader at East Central.  East Mississippi will play host to Southwest Mississippi (noon) and Marion Military Institute (4 p.m.) on Wednesday in Scooba, before welcoming Pearl River to the EMCC campus for a rescheduled doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.  The EMCC-PRCC twin bill was previously rained out on Feb. 17.  The Lady Lions close out their busy week by traveling to Copiah-Lincoln for a Friday doubleheader in Wesson.
