![]() The East Mississippi Lions open their home baseball slate Saturday afternoon against Mississippi Gulf Coast. The doubleheader is set to begin at 1 p.m. at EMCC’s refurbished Gerald Poole Field. Six of MMI’s seven tallies in the first frame proved to be unearned runs, as EMCC starter Drew Esslinger of McNeill was chased after working to nine batters. The Lions out-hit MMI, 12-5, in the contest, but four EMCC hurlers combined to issue 10 bases on balls and two hit-by-pitches. In addition, eight out of Marion Military’s dozen runs were unearned, as the visitors were hampered by six errors in the field. East Mississippi plated a pair of runs in the first on a two-run, two-out single by Addison Swink of Southeast Lauderdale. Swink went 2-for-2 for the game with three runs scored. The Lions narrowed the gap to 9-7 in the third inning when sophomore Cody Brownlee of Nettleton belted a grand slam. However, the Tigers answered with two more scores in the bottom half of the third to make it a four-run contest. Brownlee went 3-for 4 at the plate with five runs batted in, adding an RBI single in the sixth. Freshman Brandon Kiewel of South Dakota added a pair of singles in two official at-bats for the Lions. The second game of Wednesday’s scheduled doubleheader in Marion was called due to rain in the fourth inning with Marion Military on top by a 7-1 score.
