.jpg "Image") A preseason NJCAA All-American Third Team selection, sophomore third baseman Nathan Peden went 3-for-4 during Tuesday’s 7-3 setback to Faulkner State. Coach Tony Montgomery’s Lions struck first in the opener against Faulkner State with three runs in the second inning. Sophomore Nathan Riley of Hernando knocked in fellow Hernando native David Williams with a fielder’s choice for the game’s first run. Preseason NJCAA Third Team All-American Nathan Peden of Northeast Lauderdale followed with a two-out, two-run single to put the Lions on top by a 3-0 score. The Meridian native finished the opener going 3-for-4 at the plate. EMCC starting southpaw Drew Esslinger of McNeill held the Faulkner State hitters in check through the first four innings, allowing just a pair of singles and facing only 13 batters during that stretch. However, the former Hancock High School was chased in the fifth inning, as the Sun Chiefs reached him for three straight hits to open the inning, including consecutive run-scoring doubles by Cody Barber and Josh Huggins. While the Lion hitters managed only three hits over the final five innings off Faulkner State relievers Alex Layne and Ian Underwood, EMCC reliever Ricky Gardner of West Lauderdale was touched for four runs in the sixth inning. The Sun Chiefs added an insurance run in the seventh off EMCC freshman Alex Lummus of West Point’s Oak Hill Academy. In the nightcap, Co-Lin sophomore right-hander Joseph Evans faced just one EMCC batter over the minimum in recording a five-inning no-hitter for the Wolfpack. The only runners allowed by the Monticello native were walks to Luke Walker and Billy Beard in the first and second innings, respectively. After plating three runs in the first, followed by a pair of tallies in the second inning and a solo score in the fourth, the Wolfpack rang up four more runs in the fifth inning to result in the 10-run mercy rule outcome. EMCC starter Corey Luke took the loss in the nightcap for the Lions, allowing five runs on five hits before giving way to Derek Beach in the second frame. In addition to sending just 16 batters to the plate in the second game, East Mississippi was hampered by five errors, including three miscues during Co-Lin’s three-run first inning. The 1-3 Lions travel to Decatur to meet East Central and Bossier Parish (La.) in single games Friday at noon and 3 p.m., respectively. EMCC then heads to Summit to take on Southwest Mississippi in a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. |
