.jpg "Image") Coach Sharon Thompson’s 17-4 Lady Lions won their seventh straight contest with a 70-45 non-divisional road victory over Pearl River Monday night in Poplarville. The EMCC men dropped a 78-61 decision to PRCC in the nightcap. Coach Sharon Thompson’s 17-4 Lady Lions shot 52 percent (28-of-54 FGs) from the field, while limiting the Lady Wildcats to just 29-percent field-goal shooting (17-of-59 FGs), en route to claiming their 13th win over the last 15 contests. Monday’s 25-point victory over PRCC marked EMCC’s third win over the Lady Wildcats this season, having previously claimed a 71-43 home triumph back on Nov. 13 in Scooba and also winning, 64-52, in Mississippi Gulf Coast’s Thanksgiving tournament. Sophomore Angelique Burtts and freshman Martika Hull from Southeast Lauderdale tallied 16 points apiece to lead the EMCC women Monday in Poplarville. Burtts, a Georgia State signee, also added nine rebounds and six steals in the winning effort. The Pearl River women, now 2-19 on the season, were led by Reneka Thompson with 10 points and eight rebounds, while Shyeeda Wynne followed with nine points and seven boards. In Monday’s nightcap, coach Mark White’s Lions fell to 13-8 overall with their second setback to Pearl River on the season. The Wildcats previously claimed an 82-79 road decision over EMCC back on Nov. 13 in Scooba. In the rematch played on the PRCC campus, the Wildcats shot a blistering 58 percent (32-of-55 FGs) from the field and owned a decisive 44-28 rebounding advantage over the visitors. Freshman guard Coco Ware of Starkville led the Lions with 17 points and nine rebounds, while sophomore guards Larry Foster and Cataurius Taylor each added a dozen points for EMCC. Improving to 16-6 overall, the Wildcats received 23 points (8-11 FGs) and 17 rebounds from Donta Smith. Rod Little followed with 20 points on 9-of-10 accuracy from the field. In the midst of playing three consecutive games away from home, the East Mississippi basketball teams resume North Division play Thursday (Feb. 12) by traveling to Moorhead to take on Mississippi Delta. The EMCC women’s and men’s teams entered the current week tied with Itawamba’s clubs for first place in the MACJC’s North Division standings with respective divisional marks of 8-1 and 6-3. |
