EMCC opens baseball campaign with doubleheader split at Marion Military Institute Print E-mail

Third-year head coach Tony Montgomery’s Lion baseball team opened the 2009 campaign with a Thursday doubleheader split at Marion Military Institute.
MARION, Ala. – The East Mississippi baseball team opened the new campaign by splitting a doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Marion Military Institute.  The Lions banged out 11 hits to claim the opener by an 8-6 final, but could manage but one hit in the second game to fall, 4-0, in the nightcap at MMI’s Scott G. Davis Field.

Coming off their winningest season (29-18) since 1994, coach Tony Montgomery’s Lions erased an early 1-0 deficit by plating three runs in the third inning of their season opener.  Freshman catcher David Williams of Hernando led off the inning with a home run, followed by a run-scoring double by West Lauderdale’s Logan Theall and a two-out RBI single by Nathan Peden of Northeast Lauderdale.

After East Mississippi added another run in the fourth, the Tigers of MMI knotted the score at 4-4 with three runs in the bottom of the inning.  The Lions bounced right back to produce four runs in the fifth inning.  Freshman Derek Beach of Heidelberg led off the frame with a single and came around to score on a double by New Hope product Billy Beard.  Nettleton’s Cody Brownlee followed with a two-run triple and later tallied the fourth run of the inning on Williams’ sacrifice fly.

MMI added solo runs in the fifth and seventh innings to round out the scoring in the opener.  In relief of starter Tyler Richardson of West Lauderdale, Amory’s Austin Riggs picked up the win with three innings of work.  Sophomore Drake Gregory of New Hope earned the save by working the final inning.

In Thursday’s six-inning nightcap, Brownlee’s second-inning single was the only hit surrendered by MMI pitching.  Freshman starter Cody Pounders of New Hope took the loss for EMCC in the second game.

In a change from previously published schedules, the 1-1 Lions will next venture to Wesson to take on Faulkner State and Copiah-Lincoln Tuesday (Feb. 10) afternoon.  Following road outings at Decatur and Summit next weekend (Feb. 13-14), East Mississippi is now slated to open its home baseball schedule on Wednesday, Feb. 18 by playing host to Marion Military Institute in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at refurbished Gerald Poole Field on EMCC’s Scooba campus.
