|East Mississippi opens pivotal two-game hoops homestand Monday against Coahoma|
Tip-off times are set for 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at Keyes T. Currie Coliseum.SCOOBA, Miss. – Entering the week in second place in their respective North Division standings, the East Mississippi basketball teams open a pivotal two-game homestand Monday by playing host to Coahoma on the Scooba campus.
With both EMCC teams standing one game behind first-place Itawamba, East Mississippi and ICC will square off Thursday (Feb. 5) in an important hoops doubleheader at Currie Coliseum. Game times in Scooba will again be at 5:30 p.m. for the women and 7:30 p.m. for the men.
The Lions are looking to avenge last month’s 85-80 road setback to Coahoma, while the EMCC women are aiming to complete the season series sweep over the Lady Tigers after claiming an 81-71 road decision a month ago in Clarksdale.
Coach Sharon Thompson’s 14-4 Lady Lions begin the week with a 6-1 divisional record after posting a 93-92 double-overtime road win over Northwest Mississippi last Thursday in Senatobia. Winners of 10 of their last dozen decisions, the EMCC women own a current four-game winning streak.
The Lady Lions continue to be paced by sophomore forward Angelique Burtts, who leads the team in scoring (15.1 ppg) and rebounding (7.9 rpg). Coming off a 24-point, 19-rebound effort last week at Northwest, the Georgia State signee has registered five double-doubles in her last nine outings. On the heels of her fourth double-double of the year with a season-high 24 points and 10 rebounds against Northwest Mississippi, freshman forward Martika Hull of Southeast Lauderdale is averaging 12.7 points and 6.6 rebounds per contest on the season.
Fresh off an entertaining 113-107 triumph at Northwest Mississippi, coach Mark White’s Lions are 11-7 overall and 4-3 in divisional play. The EMCC men are tied with Holmes for second place behind 5-2 Itawamba in the North Division standings.
Ranked among the nation’s scoring leaders at 20.3 points an outing, freshman guard Coco Ware of Starkville leads a trio of double-figure EMCC scorers on the year. Sophomore Darian Donald of Caledonia High School averages 14.1 points and 6.0 rebounds an outing, while fellow sophomore Woodie Howard of Starkville follows at 10.1 points and a team-high 7.1 boards a game.
