|EMCC completes regular-season series sweep of Northwest Mississippi|
The EMCC women opened the night with a 93-92 double-overtime win over the Lady Rangers, while the Lions completed the sweep with a 113-107 triumph over the homestanding Rangers.SENATOBIA, Miss. -- The East Mississippi basketball teams completed their regular-season series sweep of Northwest Mississippi with a pair of road wins over the Rangers Thursday night at Howard Coliseum.
In improving their record to 14-4 overall and 6-1 in North Division play, coach Sharon Thompson's Lady Lions were led by Southeast Lauderdale's Martika Hull with a season-high 24 points on perfect 10-of-10 shooting from the field. Hull also collected 10 rebounds to record her fourth double-double of the season. Sophomore Angelique Burtts registered her fifth double-double in her last nine outings with 22 points and a season-most 19 rebounds, while fellow sophomore Kottia White contributed a season-high 22 points.
In the nightcap, coach Mark White's Lions claimed a high-scoring 113-107 decision in regulation to improve to 11-7 overall and 4-3 in North Division play. Starkville's Coco Ware and Darian Donald of Columbus tallied 26 and 23 points for EMCC, respectively. Sophomores Cataurius Taylor of Memphis and Woodie Howard of Starkville each added 18 points to the winning effort.
Last month in Scooba, EMCC posted an 84-65 win over visiting Northwest Mississippi in the women's game and prevailed by an 82-79 final in the men's contest.
East Mississippi’s basketball teams enter next week’s pivotal two-game North Division homestand in second place behind Itawamba. With their lone divisional setback coming at ICC three weeks ago by a 77-71 tally, the Lady Lions stand just one game behind the undefeated (7-0) Lady Indians. The EMCC men are tied with Holmes for second place behind 5-2 Itawamba with identical 4-3 divisional marks.
EMCC opens next week’s important home slate by playing host to Coahoma on Monday (Feb. 2) before welcoming front-running Itawamba on Thursday (Feb. 5). Game times at EMCC's Keyes T. Currie Coliseum are set for 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. both days.
