![]() All-district infielder Celeste Fontenot of Brusly, La., has become East Mississippi’s first softball signee of the 2009-2010 recruiting year. Preparing for her senior season at Brusly High School, Fontenot batted .347 as a junior to earn all-district honors at shortstop. Making the switch from the outfield, the 5-foot-7 right-handed standout helped lead coach Beau Bouvier’s 2008 Lady Panthers to a regional playoff appearance and a No. 5 Class 3A state ranking en route to posting a 21-14-1 record. “From the time we watched her skills video to the first time we talked with her, we were convinced that Celeste’s eagerness to work hard and knowledge of the game worked hand in hand with the direction we’re attempting to take our program,” EMCC’s Neely noted. A seven-year participant with the Louisiana Heat travel ball club, Fontenot was selected to the all-star team of a prestigious national tournament held in Denver last summer. The two-time Class 3A all-district performer has also been chosen to all-star teams during state tournament competition the past two years. “I chose EMCC as my home away from home for the next two years because the campus feels like home to me,” Fontenot said. “I was raised in a small town and played softball for great coaches in a family atmosphere, so Scooba is a perfect fit for me because EMCC offers the exact same things.” An honor roll student in high school, Fontenot plans to study nursing in college. She is the daughter of Dane and Gerilee Fontenot of Brusly, La. – a town of about 2,000 people located in West Baton Rouge Parish. |
