.jpg "Image") Freshman Coco Ware tallied a game-high 28 points Saturday afternoon to help lead the 8-4 Lions to an 80-64 home victory over Copiah-Lincoln. In Saturday’s opener, the Lady Lions dropped a 62-43 decision to Co-Lin. Playing for the first time since Dec. 13, coach Mark White’s Lions didn’t show much rust following their three-week hiatus from court action. Improving their overall record to 8-4 on the season, EMCC took control early and cemented a 52-33 halftime lead by scoring the final 10 points of the opening period. The Lions also connected on 20-of-34 (59%) from the field during the opening 20 minutes. The EMCC men maintained their double-digit cushion throughout the second stanza en route to posting their seventh victory in the last eight decisions, including a 69-64 win at Co-Lin on Nov. 20. In addition to shooting 52 percent (31-of-60 FGs) from the field for the contest, the Lions also benefitted from a 38-26 rebounding advantage. Freshman Coco Ware of Starkville continued his scoring spree by tallying a game-high 28 points on 10-of-18 accuracy against the Wolves. The former Starkville High School standout is averaging 24.7 points over his last nine outings. Sophomore Darian Donald of Columbus scored a dozen points on 6-of-10 shooting to go along with his six rebounds, while freshman John Harris of Starkville added 11 points and seven boards for the winners. Rob Wallace led the 6-7 Wolves with 22 points, followed by Trent Hutchin’s 15 points. In their first game action since Dec. 8, coach Sharon Thompson’s Lady Lions had their five-game winning streak snapped by the 11-1 Lady Wolves. Prior to Saturday, EMCC’s most recent setback was a 69-50 loss at Copiah-Lincoln back on Nov. 20. The EMCC women came out sluggish following their nearly four-week layoff, falling behind by a 9-2 tally four minutes into the contest. An 8-0 run did briefly put the home team on top by a 10-9 count, but the visitors responded by outscoring the Lady Lions, 20-7, over the final 12 minutes of the half to take a 29-17 halftime advantage. After shooting but 30 percent in the opening period, East Mississippi’s shooting woes continued during the second stanza. Managing to cut the deficit to single digits but a couple of times over the final 20 minutes, the 9-3 Lady Lions hit just 5-of-23 field goals (22%) in the second half. Along with shooting but 26 percent (13-of-50 FGs) from the field for the game, EMCC was slowed by 22 turnovers. Sophomore point guard Kottia White of Jackson was EMCC’s lone scorer in double figures with a dozen points. Sophomore Jasmine Abrams of Columbus had six points and a game-high 11 rebounds off the bench. Latoria Holder and Rachel Vigers paced the winners with 14 and 11 points, respectively. The East Mississippi basketball teams resume North Division play by traveling to Clarksdale to take on Coahoma Community College on Thursday, Jan. 8. EMCC then heads to Itawamba for a Jan. 12 doubleheader, before returning home to play host to Mississippi Delta on Tuesday, Jan. 20. |
