Despite Coco Ware’s 27 points, the Lions saw their six-game winning streak snapped with an 86-80 setback at Alabama Southern Saturday night.
The Lions of East Mississippi had their six-game winning streak snapped by dropping an 86-80 road decision to Alabama Southern Saturday night in Monroeville.
With their most recent setback having come one month ago to date at home to Pearl River, coach Mark White’s Lions had reeled off six straight victories before Saturday’s six-point loss at Alabama Southern.  EMCC recently completed a successful three-game homestand with an 82-79 home win over Northwest Mississippi this past Monday to begin North Division play.  Saturday on the ASCC campus, East Mississippi trailed, 71-57, with just under seven minutes remaining.  Following an EMCC timeout, the Lions implemented an all-guard lineup to spread out the Alabama Southern defense.  The strategy paid off as the visitors cut the deficit to a single point with 1:20 left in the contest. Down by one point and with the ball, EMCC sharp-shooter Coco Ware was called for a traveling violation.  Fellow freshman guard Terence Bennett was then whistled for a blocking foul to send ASCC to the line.  After Ware misfired on a three-point attempt with 35 seconds remaining, the Lions were relegated to fouling the rest of the way. Ware, a former Starkville High School standout, continued his recent scoring spree for the Lions with a team-high 27 points against the Eagles, who improved to 9-3 on the season.  Having averaged 24.3 points over his last eight outings, the freshman backcourt performer has raised his season’s scoring average to an even 20 points per contest.  Fellow Starkville native Woodie Howard followed with 11 points, while Larry Foster of York, Ala., added 10 points for EMCC.

The 7-4 Lions, along with coach Sharon Thompson’s 9-2 Lady Lions, will resume basketball action after the holidays by playing host to Copiah-Lincoln on Saturday, Jan. 3.  Game times at Keyes T. Currie Coliseum on the Scooba campus are set for 2 and 4 p.m.
