| Lady Lions fall to East Central to snap win string; Lions cruise to 86-55 win over ECCC in nightcap |

 Jasmine Abrams (left) recorded a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds Monday against East Central, while Woodie Howard tallied a season-high 17 points in EMCC’s 86-55 home win over the Warriors. In Monday’s opener, coach Sharon Thompson’s Lady Lions couldn’t find an answer for sophomore guard Mystee Dale in the opening 20 minutes of action. The former Choctaw Central standout pumped in 19 first-half points on 7-of-10 shooting to stake the reigning Region 23 champions to a 29-17 halftime advantage. The visiting Lady Warriors, now 4-2 on the season, shot 48 percent from the field in the opening half, while limiting EMCC to just 29 percent first-half shooting. ECCC’s Dale set the tone in the second stanza as well by hitting one of her four 3-pointers to begin the second-half scoring. The visitors extended their lead to as many as 19 points (42-23) midway through the closing period on the way to cruising to the 11-point road victory. The Lady Lions, now 4-1 on the year, had opened the current campaign with four consecutive wins, including a 62-60 road triumph over preseason 13th-ranked East Central on Nov. 6 in Decatur. Dale, who led all scorers with 22 points in the year’s previous meeting, finished with a game-high 27 points Monday night in Scooba on 10-of-17 shooting, including 4-of-6 accuracy from beyond the three-point arc. Rashima Jenkins and Alisha McAfee followed with eight points apiece for the winners. Sophomores Jasmine Abrams of Columbus and Kottia White of Jackson led the Lady Lions with 15 and 10 points, respectively. Abrams posted a double-double for EMCC by adding a dozen rebounds. In the nightcap, coach Mark White’s 2-3 Lions averaged their earlier 73-63 road setback to East Central by controlling the rematch from start to finish. Never trailing in the contest, EMCC went up by a 9-2 score four minutes into the contest on the way to maintaining a 36-19 halftime lead. The Lions basically put the game away during the opening four minutes of the second stanza. A three-point play by freshman Rob Elam capped a 12-0 EMCC run to open the second half and give the home team a comfortable 48-19 advantage by the 16:40 mark. Shooting a sizzling 72 percent (18-of-25) from the field in the second half, the EMCC men increased their insurmountable cushion to as many as 34 points (60-26) by the 11:40 mark en route to the impressive 31-point final margin. For the contest, the Lions shot 64 percent from the field on 34-of-53 accuracy, while holding the visiting Warriors to just 37 percent (19-of-51) field-goal shooting on the night. Coming off a season-high, 29-point performance last Thursday against Pearl River, freshman guard Coco Ware of Starkville paced a quartet of double-digit EMCC scorers with a game-high 24 points on 10-of-13 shooting. Fellow Starkville native Woodie Howard followed with 17 points on 8-of-11 field goals, while Darian Donald of Columbus and Starkville’s John Harris added 13 and 10 points, respectively, to the winning effort. The East Mississippi basketball teams return to road action Thursday night (Nov. 13) by taking on Copiah-Lincoln. Tip-off times are set for 6 and 8 p.m. in Wesson. |
