| EMCC women win at ECCC for second straight road victory; Lions fall 73-63 to Warriors in nightcap |

 Darian Donald (left) and Martika Hull each scored 19 points Thursday at East Central, as the Lady Lions posted a 62-60 win over the 13th-ranked Lady Warriors and the EMCC men dropped a 73-63 decision in the nightcap. All 10 players who saw playing time against the 13th-ranked ECCC women contributed to the Lady Lions' winning effort. Freshman Martika Hull of Meridian's Southeast Lauderdale High School led coach Sharon Thompson's 2-0 club with 19 points. Sophomore Sanitra Bush of Starkville was EMCC's only other scorer in double figures with 10 points. Returning sophomores Jasmine Abrams of Columbus and Kottia White of Jackson's Murrah High School followed with nine and seven points, respectively, while Middle Tennessee State transfer Angelique Burtts added seven points for the winners. Both of EMCC’s wins on the young season have been by two points, having opened the campaign with a 78-76 triumph at Jones County this past Monday. "We didn't play very well, but we never gave up and played well enough to win," Thompson admitted. "I really like the fact that we played 10 people and everyone contributed. Once again, we competed for the entire 40 minutes." East Central sophomore Mystee Dale led all scorers with 22 points. Entering the game with a 2-0 record and ranked 13th in the 2008-09 NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball pre-season poll, the Lady Warriors were 22-8 a year ago en route to capturing the Region 23 title. In the men's contest, coach Mark White's 0-2 Lions let a slim one-point lead slip away in the final minute before the half and trailed, 30-25, at the break. EMCC battled in the second half, but poor free-throw shooting and costly turnovers contributed to the 10-point setback. The Lions finished the contest below the .500 mark from the line with 13-of-30 shooting from the stripe, including but 5-of-16 in the opening half. For the second straight game, sophomore Darian Donald of Columbus' Caledonia High School posted career-high scoring numbers with 19 points. Starkville's Coco Ware and Wallace State-Hancefield transfer Larry Foster followed with nine and eight points, respectively. Sophomore Josh Luckett, a 6-foot-5 guard-forward for the Warriors, led all scorers with 26 points, including 23 in the second half. "Give East Central credit because they out-toughed us tonight," White noted. "They made us play their style of game, and we didn't respond. I'm disappointed in that we didn't finish out the game with toughness like we had been doing during the preseason." East Mississippi's basketball teams wind down their season-opening, three-game road swing by taking on Hinds Monday night in Utica. EMCC then tips off its home slate by playing host to Pearl River Thursday at Keyes T. Currie Coliseum on the Scooba campus. The women's game begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by the 7:30 p.m. men's contest. |
