.jpg "Image") Coach Buddy Stephens’ 8-1 Lions will take a No. 8 national ranking and seven-game winning streak into Saturday afternoon’s state football playoff contest against 12th-ranked Pearl River at EMCC’s Sullivan-Windham Field. Coach Buddy Stephens’ 8-1 Lions capped a perfect North Division slate (6-0) and extended their winning streak to seven straight games with Saturday’s 35-15 divisional win at Mississippi Delta. The 20-point road victory gave EMCC its first eight-win season on the field since 1974, in addition to marking the school’s longest consecutive win string since the 1964 campaign under the guidance of legendary coach Bob “Bull” Sullivan. Up two notches after breaking into the national Top 10 last week, this week’s No. 8 ranking marks the school’s highest regular season-ending national ranking since Sullivan’s 10-1-1 EMJC squad finished the 1963 campaign ranked seventh nationally in the J.C. Grid-Wire national rankings. In addition to EMCC and PRCC being ranked eighth and 12th, respectively, in this week’s NJCAA/JC Football.com Top 20, the state of Mississippi is also represented in this week’s national poll by 10th-ranked and defending co-National Champion Mississippi Gulf Coast and No. 15 Jones County. Top-seeded MGCCC from the South Division plays host to No. 2 seed Northwest Mississippi of the North in Saturday’s other state football playoff semifinal. Saturday’s two winners will play for the state championship the following Saturday (Nov. 8) at a site and time to be determined. Making their first state football playoff appearance since 1984 and hosting their first-ever state playoff contest, Stephens’ eighth-ranked and top-seeded EMCC Lions play host to 12th-ranked and No. 2 seed Pearl River from the South Division Saturday afternoon on the Scooba campus. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at EMCC’s Sullivan-Windham Field. Tickets will be available for purchase on the day of the game at a cost of $10 for adults and $5 for students. Tailgating for Saturday’s playoff contest will run from 10 a.m. until game time at Aust Hall. As a special attraction, student artwork, including those from EMCC student-athletes, will be on display inside Aust Hall as well as on the lawn of the building. |
