Sophomore receiver Leon Berry has earned MACJC/Region 23 Offensive Player of the Week honors for the eighth-ranked Lions after compiling 229 all-purpose yards in EMCC’s recent 35-15 win at Mississippi Delta.
SCOOBA, Miss. – In compiling 229 all-purpose yards in East Mississippi’s 35-15 divisional football win at Mississippi Delta this past Saturday, sophomore wide receiver Leon Berry has earned MACJC/Region 23 Offensive Player of the Week honors for the eighth-ranked Lions.

A second-year standout from Griffin, Ga., Berry set personal season highs with seven receptions for 141 yards and one touchdown, including a season-best 55-yard catch in EMCC’s 20-point road win over the Trojans.  He collected his fourth touchdown reception of the year with a 24-yard scoring grab from national offensive player of the year candidate Randall Mackey in the third quarter.  The touchdown was Berry’s sixth overall score of the campaign, including one kickoff return and a punt return for touchdowns earlier in the year.

Against Mississippi Delta this past weekend for coach Buddy Stephens’ 8-1 Lions, Berry also picked up 61 kickoff return yards and 11 punt return yards.  He added another 16 yards on a reverse to share this week’s offensive league honor with Northwest Mississippi tailback Tijuan Green.

An All-Region 23 First Team pick a year ago, Berry has 37 receptions on the year for 626 yards to rank third among the MACJC statistical leaders in receiving yards per game (69.6 yards per game).  The 6-foot-1, 185-pound all-purpose threat leads the conference in kickoff returns (27.7 yards per return) and is second in punt returns (12.9 yards per return).  Berry also stands tied for 10th among the league’s scoring leaders with 36 points for the season.

Berry’s selection gives East Mississippi five conference player of the week recipients in the nine weeks of this year’s regular season.  Offensively, Mackey garnered national and league player of the week honors during Week 4, while sophomore strong safety Alex Hill of West Point and freshman linebacker Alvin Ellis of Columbus earned MACJC defensive laurels during Weeks 1 and 8, respectively.  In addition, sophomore punter Charlie Fall of Stringer collected special teams player of the week honors within the conference during the year’s fifth week.

Ranked eighth nationally in this week’s NJCAA/JC Football.com Top 20 and riding a seven-game winning streak, the North Division Champion EMCC Lions will play host to 12th-ranked and second-seeded Pearl River of the South Division Saturday afternoon on the Scooba campus in the opening round of the state football playoffs.  Game time is set for 2 p.m. at EMCC’s Sullivan-Windham Field.
