| Lion linksters to host EMCC Fall Invitational Monday at Highlands Plantation |

 Guided by head coach Dale Peay (far left) and shown here with EMCC alumnus Buddy Faulkner (far right), the East Mississippi men’s golf team will look to defend its EMCC Fall Invitational team title Monday at Highlands Plantation near Starkville. Along with featuring coach Dale Peay’s host Lions, the one-day event will also include teams from Jones County JC, East Central CC, Northwest Mississippi CC, Northeast Mississippi CC and Itawamba CC. Highlands Plantation is a par-70, 6,275-yard semi-private country club development located in Oktibbeha County. “I believe we will have a very competitive tournament again this year and hopefully we will be able to defend our title from last year,” Peay said. Last fall at Highland Plantations, East Mississippi claimed the school’s first-ever golf title with a one-stroke team victory (317-318) over runner-up Northwest. Last year’s EMCC-hosted tournament also featured Pearl River, Itawamba and Northeast. Playing with five freshmen on the campaign thus far, Monday’s tournament will mark EMCC’s fourth competition of the fall. Earlier this month, Peay and his Lion linksters participated in their Second Annual World Class Fall Golf Tour by competing as a team at prominent courses along Alabama’s Gulf Shores and around the Destin area in Florida. Calhoun City’s Will Black earned medalist honors for the Lions during the tour by maintaining a 76.4 stroke average. Former Northwest Rankin High School teammates Garrett Alford and James Winter were next with respective averages of 77.2 and 77.8, followed by Belmont’s Trey Adams (80.1) and Michael Lauseng (80.4) of Bossier City, La. “The team had a great time on our fall tour,” Peay noted. “It was a great golfing experience and gave our guys a chance to bond together as a team. We played some very tough courses from the longest tees.” Playing without sophomores Zak Holloway (treatment for Crohn’s Disease) and Brian Ledbetter (recovering from August auto accident), the Lions opened the fall campaign last month by finishing third as a team at the Mississippi College Invitational held at the Patrick Farms Golf Course in Jackson. Lauseng finished fifth individually to lead the Lion quintet with a 2-over-par 74. Adams and Black followed with scores of 77 and 80 to finish the one-day, MC-hosted tournament in eighth and 13th-place ties, respectively. Also this fall, the Lions took unofficial top honors during a three-team scrimmage held at the Dogwood Golf Club in Grenada. Carding 297 as a team to better Northwest and Itawamba, EMCC was led by Adams and Lauseng with scores of 73. Alford was next with a 74, followed by Black (77) and Winter (84). |
