Freshmen Randall Mackey (left) and Nikeisha Noel have been rewarded for their performances during the past week by being tabbed NJCAA Players of the Week for football and women’s soccer, respectively.
SCOOBA, Miss. – East Mississippi Community College has earned the distinction of having two national players of the week in different sports during the same week.  Freshman quarterback Randall Mackey and first-year midfielder/forward Nikeisha Noel have collected NJCAA Player of the Week honors in football and women’s soccer for their respective efforts during the past week.

Also tabbed the MACJC/Region 23 Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Lions’ come-from-behind 27-23 road victory over then-No. 2 Mississippi Gulf Coast last Thursday in Perkinston, Mackey totaled 527 yards of total offense and had a hand in all four of the team’s touchdowns against the defending national co-champions.  The 2007 PARADE All-American by way of Bastrop (La.) High School completed 36-of-58 passes for 441 yards and three touchdowns.  Mackey also rushed for 86 yards on a dozen carries, including the game-winning, 3-yard scoring run with 21 seconds left.

In leading first-year head coach Buddy Stephens’ 3-1 Lions to a pair of unanswered fourth-quarter touchdowns at Gulf Coast, Mackey accounted for all 77 yards of total offense during EMCC’s game-winning drive, going 6-of-6 through the air for 58 yards and rushing three times for 19 yards.  The 5-foot-11, 190-pound playmaker currently ranks second nationally in passing (273 yards per game) and third in total offense (327.5 yards per game).   For the season, Mackey has thrown for 1,092 yards and eight touchdowns on 84-of-133 passing, while rushing for 218 yards and three scores on 33 attempts.

Noel, a freshman for coach Junior Noel’s 4-4-1 Lady Lion soccer team, scored all six of her team’s goals in a pair of 3-2 EMCC home wins last week over Northwest Mississippi and Jones County.  The Trinidad & Tobago Under-20 National Team member presently ranks seventh among the NJCAA scoring leaders with 36 total points after scoring her 16th goal of the season this week at Southwest Mississippi.  The 5-foot-8 midfielder/forward also has four assists on the year.  With four hat tricks on the campaign, Noel has totaled 11 goals and two assists for 24 points over her last five outings.

“Nikeisha obviously has talent, but what has impressed me the most about her recently is the way she has taken to her teammates so significantly of late,” EMCC’s second-year head coach stressed.  “She has the general respect of her teammates and they look to her for answers offensively.”
